Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need any prior filmmaking experience?

Absolutely not, just an interest!

What should I bring?

A laptop or notebook, water, snacks, and a camera/tripod or any gear you may have questions about. Most importantly, come with a project idea in mind. Something you can realistically accomplish within a month.

What does the day look like?

10am to 4pm with an hour lunch break at 1pm. We'll work through a structured outline you can find here.

Do I need my own camera or equipment?

Nope! If you have it, feel free to bring it, but it's not necessary. You'll get hands-on experience with my cameras.

What happens after the workshop?

The four weeks following the workshop are broken into phases. Week 1 is pre-production: honing in on the plan, scope, solo vs. crew, format, etc. Week 2 is production: getting in the field filming, shooting b-roll, interviewing, etc. Week 3 is editing. Week 4 is finalizing the edit. First cuts are due May 31.

You'll also get two 1-on-1 sessions with me (30 min each). The first is a pre-production meeting within the first week to steer the development of your project with advice on planning. The second is after your first cut to analyze what you have and tighten it up. I'm also available for direct correspondence as your project progresses.

Final cuts will be screened online as a group with discussion following. Classmates are welcome to work together in groups if they'd like.

When will the online content library be available?

We plan to launch by July, and will be constantly expanding and evolving the material over time. All workshop participants receive a lifetime subscription and access to the library and all future updates.

Is food or parking included?

Snacks will be available, but lunch is not provided. Parking is available on-site.

What's the refund or cancellation policy?

Refunds and cancellations are approved on a case-by-case basis. Costs going into the project are dependent on committed attendees, so refund availability may vary. Refunds are accepted until April 26, then subject to availability after.

Can I attend remotely?

This is an in-person workshop intensive. Remote applicants will not be considered at this time.

Who are the guest speakers?

Guest speakers will vary based on availability, but will range from industry professionals to indie filmmakers, actors, distributors, and more.

What age range is this for?

18 and up. All experience levels welcome.

Will I walk away with a finished project?

Yes! The end goal of this workshop is to have a finished project in your hands, with my guidance along the way.

Can I opt out of the project portion?

Yes, but it is heavily discouraged. The best approach to learning is hands-on, in the field. You'll get far more out of the experience by following through on a project.
